One of the most synonymous Christmas symbols and a point of great excitement for many is the Christmas decorations going up in their local town. In East Grinstead, it was no different, as the Christmas tree was once again delivered to East Grinstead town centre. For over 35 years Mid-Sussex Timber has cut down the Christmas tree and donated it to the town centre. Positioned on Market Square in East Grinstead’s high street and each year, Mid-Sussex Timber delivers and assembles the tree, ready for the annual ‘Big Reveal – Christmas Tree Lights Switch-On’.
The Meridian Rotary Club in East Grinstead and the family-run timber merchant, have worked together for many years, through several generations of the Waters family, to deliver the towns Christmas tree. This year, in particular, to commemorate Mid-Sussex Timber’s 90th year, it was cut down by Simon Waters himself. Simon, along with his brother Tim, took over the company in the 1980s from their father R D Waters. The company today is now operated as a family-run business to this day, by third-generation Waters family members, Alex Waters and Cara Waters.
Each year after Mid-Sussex Timber have assembled the annual Christmas tree, the Town Council puts on a festive display of Christmas lights and these are officially switched on by the Town Mayor in the high street for the ‘big Christmas lights switch-on’, which this year fell in conjunction with the High Street Traders ‘big reveal’. The occasion is marked with fun and festivity with local families coming out to celebrate the occasion with Christmas carols and Santa Claus himself, making an appearance.
